FAQ

Questions parents ask us

Can’t find your answer? Ask us on your free Literacy Fit call.

Is this ABA?

No. We teach reading using structured literacy, delivered in a neurodiversity-affirming way. Many of our families also work with a BCBA, speech-language pathologist or occupational therapist, and — with your permission — we’re happy to coordinate with your child’s team so everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Can you teach a child who is non-speaking or uses AAC?

Yes. Being non-speaking doesn’t mean a child can’t learn to read. We adapt how children respond — letter tiles, pointing, picture choices, their AAC device — so they can show what they know.

My child reads fluently but doesn’t understand it. Can you help?

Yes. This pattern (often called hyperlexia) is common. We keep building decoding, but we put extra focus on vocabulary, language and comprehension strategies, using visuals and topics your child cares about.

Where do lessons happen?

In your home anywhere in our Toronto service area, or online. Tell us your nearest intersection in the intake and we’ll confirm availability.

How much does it cost?

We share our pricing openly on your free Literacy Fit call, along with exactly what paperwork you’ll receive for funding programs, benefits or tax claims. No surprises.

Can I use OAP funding?

It depends on your funding and how the service is delivered. Standalone tutoring isn’t one of the OAP’s named core clinical services, so we’ll walk you through your options honestly.

What ages do you work with?

We work with young children who are just starting to read through to older students who are still building their skills. Share your child’s age and grade in the intake and we’ll let you know how we can help.

How long and how often are sessions?

Most children do best with one or two sessions a week. Session length depends on your child’s stamina — some start with short sessions and build up over time.

What if my child has a meltdown or refuses to participate?

That’s okay — and it’s information, not failure. Tutors are prepared to pause, offer regulation breaks, adjust demands and try again another way. We never force participation.

Do you follow Orton-Gillingham?

Our lessons are built on Orton-Gillingham principles — explicit, systematic, cumulative and multisensory teaching — and use the UFLI Foundations scope and sequence as a framework for phonics.

Will you work with my child’s school, SLP or BCBA?

Yes, with your written permission. Coordinating goals makes everyone’s work more effective.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Online sessions are available anywhere in Ontario and work well for many children, especially with a parent nearby for the first few sessions.

What is the First-Session Fit Guarantee?

If your child and their tutor don’t connect in the first session, that session is free — or we’ll match you with a different tutor right away.

What information do you collect in the intake?

Only what we need to match your child with the right tutor and prepare for your call. See our privacy policy for details.
